If You Don’t Like the Weather… (2023) by Yati E. Durant
If You Don’t Like the Weather… is a symphonic tribute to Scotland. The work describes the sudden and changing weather of this dynamic country through chords, sweeping lyrical melodies and foot-tapping beats. Each passage is suddenly interrupted (sometimes twice) by “the weather”, before carrying-on. Lush, romantic landscapes are described in a pastoral fiddle solo - which is picked-up with a bouncy march toward the end of the work.
Commissioned and premiered by the WDR Funkhausorchester, conducted by Rumon Gamba at the WDR Funkhaus Großer Sendesaal (and live on WDR3 radio/Livestream) on 31st March 2023. The Scottish Fiddle soloist was Georgina Finlayson.
Orchestration: 2/2/2/2, 4/2/3, 17(6,6,5)/5(3,2)/4(2,2), 3(1,2), 4 Timpani, 1 Harp and 3 percussion (Flute 2 doubles Picc., Clarinet 2 doubles Tenor Sax, Bassoon 2 doubles Cbn., Trombone 3 plays Bass Trombone.)
