Description:This film music workshop will introduce students to working on an advanced level with scoring, conducting and producing string quartet compositions and recording to film scenes. Participants will receive theory and technique and apply it in a real-life professional scoring session with the renowned Paranormal String Quartet  The scoring sessions will be recorded and participants will receive video and audio of the sessions upon completion.

Method & outline

Students will be given a film scene (approx. 5 min) to score for string quartet approx. 1 month in advance of the workshop.

The first two days of the workshop will take place online and will focus on film music scoring techniques and creative theories, including:

  • Techniques regarding theories and methods of scoring scenes to film

  • Setting up a film recording session with a DAW

  • Synchronisation with click and/or streamers and punches

  • Conducting the live instrumentalists to timing information

  • Working with the quartet to achieve good results (producing)

The second three days of the workshop will take place in the HFF and HfMT and are focussed on setting up, recording, mixing and producing with the string quartet. Each participant will have time conducting and recording their own film scenes with the String Quartet under the supervision of Yati Durant. The beginning and end of each session will involve a preparation for composers/conductors and analysis of (video) feedback.
